Chapter Thirteen

Jackson

Lyra’s interview with my brothers was exactly the reminder I needed—the reminder to be more careful. Nothing with Lyra will ever be 100% off the record. I was kidding myself. I know she said she’s done a draft of the article already, but it’s due at the end of the month, and things can change between now and then. We’ve only got ten days left. Ten days left to remind Lyra that I’m a good guy. The Man In Charge. A visionary CEO who is contributing to a brighter future with AI technology. A leader who is eager to mentor future generations of scientists and innovators. A business leader who deserves to be named a Global Business Mentor by the Society Foundation. Jackson Park, Mr. Charming. That’s who I’ll be tonight. I have no choice. It’s the night of the Gala Fundraiser for STEM Education. The Park Gala Fundraiser for STEM Education. Normally I don’t put my name on these things but in this case, I’m pulling out all the stops.

At least she’s still coming with me to the event. I’m waiting for her in the limo now. Lyra agreed to let me pick her up and we’ve been parked in front of her apartment for ten minutes already, waiting for her. Finally, she appears at the door—and I catch my breath. She’s wearing an icy light blue gown that goes to the floor, a full ball gown, made of some gauzy floating material. It’s strapless, leaving her creamy white shoulders and neck fully exposed. I step out of the limo to open the door for her.

“Jackson.” She greets me with a gentle smile, warm again. I feel myself relax slightly. The last time I saw her, in my office, I wasn’t sure if she was going to cry or hit me. This is the relaxed, warm, gentle version of Lyra that I adore.

“You look absolutely amazing.” I encircle my arms around her waist and pull her close to me, kissing her gently. I notice that she has a single diamond hanging around her neck, on a chain so thin it’s almost invisible. It makes it look like the diamond is just floating there on its own.

“Thank you. You don’t look so bad yourself.””Well, my name is on the Gala, so I guess I had to dress the part,” I grin, gesturing to the tux I’m wearing. A flash of something—annoyance?—crosses her face. Is it because I said the gala was in my name? Was that too self-serving for her? Shit. I hate feeling this way around Lyra—on my guard and constantly questioning every move. Easy, Jackson. Just breeze by it. “So, shall we?” I gesture to the limo and put out a hand to help her in.

Lyra is quiet on the way to the gala, which only makes my nerves worse. To distract myself, I review my notes for the speech I’ll have to give later, but I keep glancing at Lyra out of the corner of my eye.
